My Story
My journey into motherhood was not what I expected and I was not prepared for what was about to unfold.
Pregnancy
My husband and I were incredibly lucky when it came to conceiving. We fell pregnant quickly and my whole experience with pregnancy was pretty textbook and I absolutely loved being pregnant, despite the slight morning sickness at the beginning, tiredness and pelvic girdle pain!
Labour
I was induced three days before my due date and it resulted in a three day labour with every intervention. Ending in a traumatic vontuse and forceps delivery. I started motherhood already sleep deprived and feeling like I had failed my daughter due to the graze to her cheek and black eye.
Postpartum
I started motherhood with the usual ‘baby blues’, however, the intense feeling of love overrode this, which meant I didn’t think there was anything wrong. Then over the next four months, it went from extreme anxiety to postnatal depression, OCD and finally, psychosis.
Admission to an MBU
After my first psychotic episode in the middle of the night, my husband phoned the doctors and advocated for a health professional to come out and assess me. It was from here that I was admitted to a Mother & Baby Unit and sectioned for a month.
2025
Recovery was not easy and it took longer than expected. I then suffered a relapse in January 2024. Following this, I have seen the importance of having the right support and care in place. But I can hand on heart say, that now I am living a fulfilled, happy life and will be making it my life’s mission to help other mums achieve the same.
